Working together to achieve critical fire safety improvements

Sonoma Mountain Road Shaded Fuel Break Project

In Progress April 2026 - August 2026

This project is an excellent example of two adjacent communities—the established Grove Street Firesafe Council and the West Sonoma Mountain Firewise Community—teaming with Sonoma County to achieve a critical fire safety infrastructure improvement for the entire County.

Project Overview

Funding: Paid for with Sonoma County Measure H funds
Community Support: 21 WSM Community members completed the online Firewise Home Assessment survey to document evidence of community support
Property Access: 20 WSM Community owners with Sonoma Mountain Road frontage signed Temporary Access Agreements for the Rancho Adobe Fire District to enter their properties
Work Scope: Uplimb trees and remove brush along Sonoma Mountain Road
Timeline: Work started in April 2026 and is scheduled to be completed in August 2026

Project Impact

This project makes Sonoma Mountain Road a fire-hardened route providing essential access and egress for first responders and evacuating residents. It's a critical component of the broader Sonoma County evacuation route over Sonoma Mountain that includes:

The Sonoma Mountain Road Shaded Fuel Break project (in process)
The Grove Street Shaded Fuel Break project (completed)
Converting the private paved road connecting Sonoma Mountain Road and Grove Street into a Fire Department controlled fire evacuation route (completed)
